Homecoming 2009 and College stuff!

Well Homecoming 2009 is now history. It was a pretty busy week for the house but we managed to enjoy it all! It started off with the Homecoming Games hosted by the After Prom committee on Sunday night. Dana and I decided this year in stead of being in charge of a game we would just go up and enjoy watching the kids participate. They had a lot of fun playing some crazy games! Monday we were in Adel for a XC meet which the boys won! Thursday was the Powder Puff football game which pits the Senior girls against the Junior girls. This was the first one we have been able to attend because usually there is a XC meet that same night. This year Jordan was asked to sit in the press box and give commentary. He was really funny and had a great time! It was really weird and cool to hear our son's voice over the sound system. The Juniors beat the Seniors. The most entertaining part was the Junior XC boys dressed up as cheerleaders!! Later that night there was a bonfire. The first ever in the school's history. We didn't stay as it was mostly for the kids. They must have thought that Jordan did a good enough job in the booth earlier because they asked him to emcee the events going on at the bonfire....the cheers...speakers and such! Football Friday was a busy day so I took the day off of work. I went over and watched Abbey run the mile and Jordan and the other varsity XC runners came over to run with the kids for encouragement. Abbey did a great job. She looked so focused and on a mission. Then it was off to the parade and coronation. We took Carson out of school early so he could ride in the parade with the Booster Club and throw candy. He was in heaven! The coronation crowned King Eddie and Queen Dani. Jordan was not named Homecoming King but he remains King of our hearts! (I know....kind of cheesey!!) He found a partner for the dance in Courtney P. He threw it out on Facebook on Wednesday night to see if there was anyone out there that wanted to go to the dance with him. A little unconventional but it provided results.

Our XC boys have been on a roll!! We have won the last three meets we have been at. Adel, Nevada, and North Polk. We are ranked 6th in the state for 3A. These boys have been working really hard to get to the state meet. We were lucky to find out that we will run at Perry for our district meet in 2 weeks. We have had to go to Atlantic the last 3 years. We will run at Perry next week for our Conference meet so our boys will have a chance to know the course before districts. They have been running no matter what the weather conditions are. Their sights are set on Ft Dodge on October 31st! In their district they have the 3rd highest ranking and they only take the top 3 teams so they will have to run very well to get there! Jordan ran a personal best at Neveda of 17:51.

Show choir has started for Abbey. They had a week of early morning practices last week and then auditions this week. We are fairly certain she has a spot. She is in heaven that it is starting. On September 26th she had a really cool opportunity to be an extra in a movie that they were using the DC-G Middle School to shoot in. The movie is called "Smitty" and has Mira Sorvino, Louis Gossett, Jr, and Peter Fonda in it. She spent about 5 hours at the school waiting to shoot some cafeteria scenes. She hopes she doesn't end up on the editing room floor. We spent most of the night texting back and forth and she was just giddy! She met someone named Boo Boo who is apparently in the Twilight Movie series. For a teenage girl it doesn't get any better than that!! She took photos with her cell phone and he signed the phone for her. She was over the moon when I went and picked her up. Not sure how much she slept that night!

Carson and Emma have been great. They both really enjoy school. This week has been all about Fire Prevention so they have both made a trip to the Fire Station and have been busy comparing stories. They have been going to all the XC meets and love running around. They also love the attention the high school girls shower them with! I spend alot of the meets trying to prevent my small children from running into the path of the big kids while they run! We ran at TCI (a very nice local golf course) this week and they had a blast picking up golf balls from the driving range. I am pretty certain that we weren't suppose to be removing said golf balls and my children are now considered criminals but it kept them happy.

Since my last post, Dana and I have both turned another year older! We celebrated with meals from out favorite restaurants in between Homecoming activities. We have bowled our 3rd week as of last night and are having lots of fun. We are bowling really well and my average keeps going up. Which sounds great, but eventually it will just become an unreachable number. Both our guys are bowling in the 200's and Krista and I have been known to bowl in the 160's and up. I kept it real last night with scores in the 1 teens and 120's.

Dana and I took Jordan to the Golden Circle College Fair on Sunday. There was over 140 colleges there and we were able to talk to people from the colleges he is interested in. We spent an hour collecting info on colleges and financial aid and then we took him to our favorite Mexican restaurant, held him hostage in a booth for an hour and discussed what we had received and what he has going on in his head. It was the most productive conversation we have had in a long time! We got out of him his top 4-5 choices of schools. He has been getting calls from college track coaches to see if he would be interested in running track at their school. He is interested in running but the best information we received from our pow wow was that he is interested in communications/broadcasting. He said he had a lot of fun up in the booth at the Powder Puff game. He is interested in pursuing something along that lines. He is going to see if he can shadow the local sports director at one of the major network news stations here in Des Moines to see if that is the direction he would like to go. He mentioned "sports management". Not quite sure what that is but am thrilled to death he might actually have a path now. He refers to it as an "narrow dirt road" but, hey, at least we are headed in the right direction. The next month finds us making at least 4 college visits. Hoping that by actually seeing the campus and speaking with the Track and Field coach that my indecisive teen will have an easier time making a decision!

Finally....a little food for thought. Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue!

Enjoy some pictures from the past two weeks!

It's been awhile!

Terribly sorry for those of you that love to "stalk" this blog. I am assuming that most of you have moved on to other things by now since I have not been so good about keeping you up to date. I am not quite sure that what we do is all that riveting but I have received a few emails asking about what we have been up to. So here is an update about what has been going on. But....be forewarned, this might be a lengthy post so if you are pressed for time you may want to come back. If you have time on your hands, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!

I guess first I will give you a quick over view of July and August. Baseball and vacation. Really....most of summer was spent at the ball fields. When we could, we spent time of the boat...which wasn't much considering we really didn't have it running until early July. We took off the first week of August and spent time at Crest Lodge on Table Rock Lake like we do every year! It was a great time. Just the 6 of us this time as Dale (Dana's brother) is in Germany. After we got back it was State Fair time which we all love and time to prepare for back to school which the parents love and the kids are lukewarm about. And that pretty much brings us up to the present day Sump house.

Jordan stayed busy all summer with baseball, work, and saying good-bye to his friends as they headed off to college. His hard work in baseball earned him Honorable Mention All Conference for outfield. Which we would all agree shocked us a bit. No sooner than baseball had finished, he packed his bag and was off to Cross Country camp. He lets no dust settle. He loves his job with the Parks and Rec department and still get hours on the weekend supervising at the Community Center. He really got more confident on his wakeboard this summer. No crazy tricks yet but he is jumping the wake a little. He and Kelli remain close friends since she has gone to college but I do notice he is spending more time here at home since most of his group is gone. Jordan started his senior year on August 18th. I was taking that first day of school picture and he said, "This is the last first day, mom." Ouch! School is going good so far. He is taking an AP Composition class that might be the death of all of us but he is working hard at it. XC is going good. We are hoping this is the year we make it to state. Jordan is running on the varsity team but the competition is tough! He is running a 18:28 right now consistently and so far no real issues with the asthma. Think we have the right mix of meds. Next week is Homecoming and low and behold, he came home yesterday and announced that he was nominated as a Homecoming King candidate!! How exciting. He is also trying to narrow down the college choices and get applications going and there are a few scholarships with deadlines that he needs to work on.

Receiving his certificate for making the All State Track Team at the first home football game 2 weeks ago. Way cool!!

Abbey spent July and August reading! That girl is amazing. She also helped with the daycare kids a ton!!! When not helping me or reading, she was at the library or socializing with her girlfriends and helping the Youth Leadership group prepare for the new school year. She got to help in the Character Counts booth at the State Fair this year and had a fun time doing that. She turned 14 while we were on vacation!! And with pointers and encouragement from her brother also figured out the wakeboard! She is studying for the written test to get her driving permit. Doesn't feel quite ready to take it which is fine with me because I really only want to have to go to the DOT station 1 time. That is not my idea of a good time! She started her 8th grade year on August 18th and has amazing grades and seems so organized. She chose to be a XC manager rather than a runner and loves being part of the team still. She said she just wasn't cut out to be a XC runner and God bless her!! She helps with the school's Teen Center once a month and is working to raise money to go to Washington DC over Spring Break. She does that by taking tickets at school sporting events, picking up trash in the bleachers after football games and babysitting for us!! : ) She is anxiously awaiting the start of Show Choir and so are we because she is so fun to watch!

Abbey attempting to ski........

And not too successful. Ouch!

So she thinks she will try to wakeboard instead.

And it works out a little better.

Looks like she really has the hang of it!

Well...almost!

Living it up on vacation!

First day of 8th grade.

Carson spent his summer going to baseball games! He really didn't mind it. He loves talking to the other parents who are watching him grow up right along with us. He loves helping Dana in the "construction stand" aka the concession stand. Had a good diet of concession stand food for most of the summer too! When not at the ball fields he was playing video games, working on his reading, playing with the neighbor kids, and talking my leg off! He's my laugh a minute. He loves to be out on the boat or anywhere near the water! Passed Level 2 in swimming lessons with flying colors and would ride the tube behind the boat from sun up to sun down if it was possible. He started 1st grade on August 18th and really enjoys school. He bounces out of bed each morning with a smile on his face and asks us how our "sleep" was. That makes my job easier. He is reading really well. He was a bit behind in the guided reading at the end of kindergarten and I thought that maybe he would end up in Title 1 reading but we worked really hard over the summer and continue to work hard. It is fun to watch him get excited about reading new books. They evaluated him this fall and there was no need for additional help.

Has no fear!

First day of 1st grade.

He gets a desk this year! He was so excited about that!

Emma's summer was very similar to Carson's. She spent most of it at the ball fields and eating concession stand food. She loved to go to the ball games in her dresses and dance behind us parents camped in our lawn chairs. She always has playmates at the ready with the daycare kids here so she is never looking for things to do. She got brave this year and actually got on the tube and let us start the boat and pull her. She asked Jordan if he would go with her. I think that while we were on vacation Jordan talked with her privately several times about tubing and that he would go with her and she would really have fun. She loved it. She looks so little on the tube. I, of course, thought that Daddy was going way to fast but she thought it was just right. Emma passed the Preschool Level 3 in swimming lessons and is getting way more confident about putting her head under! She turned 5 in July. She celebrated with some friends at Build-A-Bear and got a new bike which she loves to ride! She started Optional Kindergarten on August 18th. She goes to school from 8:10-11:10 each day. There are 14 in her class and she loves it. She was a little nervous that first day because she didn't know anyone, but she didn't cling and followed the group to her class room. She loves doing her "homework". She doesn't love getting out of bed in the morning. Doesn't matter that she goes to bed at 8:00pm every night. So, it's a good thing that Carson is a morning person. Leaves me more time to deal with Emma in the AM.

My greeting when I picked her up!

Dana is enjoying his job and the fact that he gets to play way more golf now. He came home with "new" clubs this week. He found a great used set of Calloway's that he thought would better serve him than the Dunlop clubs he bought at Kmart in high school. Him and a few friends went to the Iowa Speedway for the Camping World Truck Series over Labor Day weekend and the weekend before that he got to go over there and do the Richard Petty Driving Experience. He had a great time. He is so much more relaxed now and enjoying some of those things that he never had time for. He really enjoys being out on the boat and showed us all that he can still ski at his age!! Ha ha! He is still the VP of the Booster Club and has been busy with the membership drive for this school year. We started bowling last night and we both enjoy that. He is just way better at it then me.

Dana enjoying a game of golf with some co-workers.

He's still got it!

The following are video clips of Dana driving a NASCAR at the Iowa Speedway. He is in the blue car in the clips.

And then there is me! I feel more like Lucille Ball than June Cleaver when it comes to my wife and mother skills. I still have 4 other kids besides my own that I play mom to. My oldest left the nest to go to Kindergarten and was replaced by a sweet 5 month old. So I have a 3 year old, 2 year old, 1 year old, and 6 month old right now that help keep my days anything but boring. I decided that I needed to put myself back on the list again and have started to do things just for me. One of the best things I have done for myself in a while. Mostly to do with a healthier lifestyle but it is paying off. My kids are my hobbies so nothing new there. I go from helping with Kindergarten and 1st grade home work to discussing college and scholarship applications. It's wacky but I just do it.

Me and my kids!

Ok...I know that you have all heard me rave about my neighbor who take amazing pictures. Well...she has been busy with my kids this summer. Mostly Jordan, who has the most amazing senior pictures courtesy of Julie. We have another session scheduled for Jordan and a family session scheduled in October. The following is some of her work. The two montages are all pictures she has taken. One of the girls and one of the boys. Now remember that Jordan has way more pictures than the others because it's his senior year. Check out her website www.landryannadesigns.com and make sure you check out her everyday pages where she shows a bit from almost every shoot. Enjoy!

Well, I think that should bring you mostly up to speed. Stay tuned for all the Homecoming fun!!

Long overdue!!

Once again, I am long overdue to update this blog. I seem to be further behind than ever and can't get caught up. I am finally caving to the peer pressure from a few close friends to update. So....here it goes.

Summer vacation is off to a fine start! I think that I am finally into our summer schedule. It took me a little while. Gone are the days of actual "quiet time". Several don't nap so the over stimulation lasts all darn day! All report cards were great and remnants of school supplies have been dealt with.

Jordan is really enjoying his job with the Parks and Rec Department. He goes swimming, to ICubs games, bowling, Big Creek, Sleepy Hollow, and occasionally has some office time answering phones and greeting people as they come to the Community Center. A great job for an active teenage boy. He spends most of his evenings playing baseball. After state track was over he was suiting for both JV and Varsity baseball to catch up since he had missed about a month of baseball practices. Now he is just suiting Varsity and starting in right field. 2 weeks ago he had his first home run ever in the JV game against Perry and then later that week followed it up with a home run in the Varsity game against Jefferson-Scranton. Not doing much pitching. Occasionally they will ask him to suit for JV and have him pitch an inning or two. The rest of his nights are spent with Kelli. They are enjoying as much time as they can together before she leaves for Central in mid-August.

Abbey has time on her hands right now. Softball finished last Friday for her. The "B" team, which she was on, was undefeated. She spent most of her time at second base. She has already read countless numbers of books and makes many trips each week to the library for more material. The Youth Leadership Group she is a part of is starting to meet and prepare for the upcoming school year. Abbey and a few of her girlfriends find time to hang out in the afternoons. And she has really been a big help here with daycare. She helps in getting them outside and playing fun games with them. She helped me take a few to the pool one day. She is indispensable and I love spending time with her. She is excited for the new Harry Potter movie to come out. It has been a tradition that Dana and I take her out for dinner (which for Abbey includes lobster!!) and then we go see the movie. Just the 3 of us!

Carson is spending his summer playing video games, catching up on Ben 10, reading, and playing outside when it's not "too hot"!! (Gets it from me. I hate the heat!) Emma spends her day doing girly things and coordinating the play of her friends (daycare kids) each day. They both have been to their share of baseball games so far and we have another 3 weeks for sure yet. They are both looking forward to swimming lessons and this weekends 4th of July party hosted by our close friends.

Dana has been playing a lot more golf this summer than in the previous ones! I guess when you aren't working yourself to death that you have time to do some of those things you really enjoy. He also finished up coaching the t-ball season and has umpired a few Little League games. He calls that his boat gas money! He got tickets to the Indy race at Iowa Speedway last weekend and all six of us went and spent Father's Day at the track with Dana. We all had a great time.

Other than being behind in almost all my tasks (except laundry! I'm afraid there would be mutiny here if I was behind on that) I am doing the usual mom stuff. I have the same 4 families that I watch during the school year. The house really needs a deep clean and I have countless projects that I am trying to do. I finally got our new computer up and running and am still figuring our Vista and my new Photosmart program. It really is never ending.

Dana and I celebrated 19 years of marriage last Tuesday. We did nothing exciting. The rain ruined our meal plans on the grill so instead we had Casey's pizza and were in bed at about 9:30. It was one of our first nights home in a while and we were all exhausted. We saved the celebration for Saturday night. We had tickets to Taylor Swift and Keith Urban here in town. We went with our great friends Mark and Kelly and it was awesome! We were in row 16 and had free liberty to go up to the stage to take pictures! I was up there taking pics of Keith and the next thing I know he walks down a ramp right in front of me. A nice security guard stepped in between us but I was close enough and crazy enough to slip my finger in the back of Keith's jeans to keep up with him as he walked to the back of the arena to a small stage there. I only had my finger in his pocket a short time as he walked quicker than the security guard did and my arm didn't stretch that far. I got some great pictures and even some bootleg video!! We had a great time.

Well...as far as we know the boat is fixed. Dana and I did the work on the impeller ourselves. We had it running in the drive and thought we had all the issues worked out. When we put it in the lake it wouldn't shift out of neutral. After talking with our boat guy we had probably melted the shifter cable in our first outing and the lower unit had to be removed to replace it. We thought that was a bigger task then we could handle and had someone else do it. Plan on testing it out Friday as we are all off for the holiday weekend.

Ok....so that is the 411 on us right now. Enjoy the following pictures. And keep our fingers crossed that I get my poop in a group enough to get to this each week.
